Images: In Context! Feature Description: Adjust Photo Highlights and Shadows
While the Equalize Brightness, Adjust Brightness/Contrast and Adjust Gamma filters enable you to lighten or darken a picture, they don't work well in situations where your subject is too dark, due to backlighting, or too light, due to a flood flash, because they lighten or darken the entire picture. This leads to lightening or darkening of areas of your photo which need no adjustment.
The Adjust Highlights and Shadows filter gives you the fine control you need to correct situations such as these by allowing you to adjust the highlights and the shadows of the photo individually, so you can lighten the shadows without washing out the lighter areas, and vice versa. Moving the Highlights slider to the right makes the light areas of the photo darker. Moving the Shadows slider to the right makes the shadows in the photo lighter. The Sample Radius control determines how far Images: In Context! will look for samples to dermine if an area is in a highlight or a shadow. For most purposes, the default value of 5 pixels is sufficient.
